When Is the Best Time to Install New Gutters?

While gutter installation can be done during virtually any season, some seasons are more suitable than others. In today’s post, local gutter and siding contractor Pechacek’s General Contracting share a look at which seasons are ideal for gutter installation.

Spring and Summer Seasons

Spring and summer are considered ideal for home improvements, particularly exterior renovations, thanks to mostly-clear weather. This is the reason why spring and summer are peak seasons for contractors. As a homeowner, you have to plan your gutter replacement months ahead and schedule a contractor as soon as you can. Booking a contractor late can be difficult as you’d be less likely to hire the contractor that you want or get the installation date that you planned for.

Fall Season

Late summer bookings usually spill over to early to mid-fall. Gutter contractor appointments during the fall season typically consist of gutter repair and maintenance work, especially late in the season as homeowners are preparing for the winter season. There is a window of about two to three weeks mid-fall where summer appointments have tapered off and where maintenance appointments haven’t picked up: for many people, this is the ideal time for gutter installation because of factors like comfortable weather and off-peak season.

Winter Season

Winter gutter installations are not unheard-of, but your gutter contractor has to have the experience to ensure quality installation. It may also limit the types of gutters that can be installed. Extreme cold can make metals less pliable, which can make creating joints more difficult. Your gutter contractor should also take into account factors like how thermal expansion affects metals.

If winter installation can’t be avoided, consider getting seamless gutters as opposed to traditional sectioned gutters. Seamless gutters are crafted on-site and have far fewer joints. This means a shorter installation time and less likelihood of developing leaks during the winter season. It also eliminates potential logistical issues, as your gutter contractor won’t have to transport pre-cut lengths of gutter trough.
