Decks and Patios: What’s the Difference?

For the majority of homeowners who are looking to increase their usable outdoor space, the options boil down to two choices: decks and patios. Adding a patio or deck can increase outside square footage without breaking the bank but how do you know which one is right for you and your family? And how can you really tell the difference?

In this article, Pechacek’s General Contracting, Roofing & Siding LLC, explains the key differences between the two.

Patios

A patio is a paved area situated directly on top of the ground and can either extend from a house or be completely detached. They are very versatile and can be made of an array of different materials like concrete, stone, tiles or brick and since they are built directly on the ground, they do not require guard railings.

Patios also offer the highest return-on-investment when it comes to home renovations. They add a perceived value of up to twelve percent and can be a great option if you plan to sell your house later down the line.

Decks

Decks, on the other hand, are typically constructed of wood or vinyl are not placed directly on the ground and feature a support system to hold it up. Popular materials for decking include redwood and cedar which can last a long time with proper maintenance. Nowadays, new decks built with modern materials like wood composites can last a homeowner eight to ten years even if they are not properly cared for.

Decks can also be built on an upper level or even a rooftop setting. They are usually enclosed with a railing and are a great option for homes that have excellent views of its surroundings. Even if you use high-end materials, building a deck is generally less expensive as they require less labor. A wooden deck is a great option for adding warmth to your home and can be a very cozy place to lounge around in even without cushions or outdoor furniture.

At the end of the day, it really depends on your needs as a homeowner. Both options have great features and can add to the value of any home. Weigh the pros and cons of each but feel confident that adding either of the two is one of the smartest decisions you can make as a homeowner.
