How to Restore a Deck With a Flaking Stain

Removing a flaking deck stain can make your outdoor space look new again. Keep in mind that before refinishing your deck, you have to get rid of the old finish, clean the surface, and recondition and stain the wood.

In today’s post, your local roofing contractor, Pechacek’s General Contracting, Roofing & Siding LLC, gives a step-by-step guide on how to remove the flaking stain on your deck.

Step 1

The first thing you need to do is to scrape off the old, flaking solid-color deck stain using a paint scraper. Reset any popped nails you may encounter or tighten screws that are loosened from the surface. Cover surrounding siding or plants with plastic before placing a hefty coat of stain remover onto the stained boards. Leave it for 15 to 30 minutes to give time for the stain to soften and scrub the surface using a stiff brush and a deck finish remover.

Step 2

With a hose, wash off the residue and let the deck dry. Once dried, use a coarse stripping disk on heavily discolored or stubborn areas.

Step 3

The third step is to sand the surface using stripping discs. They are more effective than traditional sanders. At Pechacek’s General Contracting, Roofing & Siding LLC, we are trained to accomplish any home improvement project and roof repair. Our team of professionals can design, construct and repair your deck.

Step 4

Using a deck brightener or conditioner can balance out the stain remover and restore the wood close to its original color. Apply a brightener or conditioner that’s diluted in water on the wood. Scrub the decking and rinse to bring back the original wood color.

Apply a clear penetrating finish on the surface once the wood dries. It shows off the wood’s original color but it must be reapplied at least once a year. Penetrating stains may need to be reapplied more frequently, but they don’t flake off like solid stains.
