How Should You Replace Your Damaged Siding?

When you’re having your siding repaired or replaced, you can’t just hire any professional installer. It has to be someone who’s locally trusted and dependable, so you can be confident that it will be installed correctly and prevent any future problems later on. But is it okay to replace only part of your siding? It actually depends on the severity of the damage, but it’s typically acceptable.

Our siding and gutter repair experts at Pechacek’s General Contracting give more insight:

Replacing An Entire Section Of Siding

Sometimes, an entire wall or large section of siding can be damaged. This is more apparent with cheap vinyl after getting damaged from the heat, or when aluminum panels are dented by regular yard maintenance, or when a rot and mildew has spread across an entire area of siding. If you’re having this kind of problem, then you’ll need to consider replacing large sections of your siding.

When you hire us, our siding repair contractor will address the issue by sawing out the whole offending section and carefully replacing it with new materials. Sometimes, we’ll cut partly through the board and attach new pieces with adhesives to the older boards, but we find it more practical to just replace the entire board.

Replacing Just the Boards and Panels

Damage to a single board or panel of siding is rare, but it can happen. Sometimes a branch after a bad storm or an errant baseball may crack one board in particular. Defects may cause a single panel or piece to warp as well. When this occurs, your best bet is to replace that particular piece with a new one.

Luckily, doing this type of replacement is possible for most siding materials, especially for vinyl, which is lightweight and relatively simple to prepare. Single-board replacements also work on aluminum, fiber cement and other types of siding. However, this involves removing a single board from the middle of a wall, making it difficult to replace with a new board without damaging the siding around it. This is often why it’s better to replace the entire siding instead if they’ll get damaged anyway.
