How to Know When It’s Time for A Gutter Replacement

How long until your gutters break down? A lot of homeowners ask themselves this while their gutters are being repaired. The warning signs of gutter damage will tell you when it’s time for a replacement. Pechacek’s General Contracting, Roofing & Siding LLC, a top roofing contractor in the state, list them below.

Your Gutter’s Lifespan

The warning signs start to emerge when your gutters near the end of their lifespan. But how can you keep track? Each type of gutter system has an estimated lifespan. The most common type is the aluminum and galvanized steel gutter system, which lasts 20 years. Gutters made of copper, on the other hand, can last up to 50 years. You can keep track of your gutter’s lifespan by taking note of the year it was installed.

Just keep in mind that not all gutters reach the end of their estimated lifespan, mostly due to a lack of maintenance. If you haven’t been able to maintain your gutters for a while, the warning signs might appear earlier than expected.

Rust

One sign you need to keep an eye out for rust, which usually appears on the bottom of gutters. It would also be a good idea to check your gutters for peeling paint, which exposes your gutters to rain and subsequent corrosion.

Leaks

Left unattended, rust can leave holes in your gutters. During rainy days, check if rainwater flows all the way to the end of your downspouts.

Sagging Gutters

Nails and fasteners that attach your gutters to the fascia board will eventually start to buckle under the weight of rainwater. When this happens, your gutters will start to sag. To reduce the risk of leaky and sagging gutters, make sure only a reputable contractor does your gutter installation
