Raised Decks
If you’re living room is located on the second floor, it might be better to install a raised deck. Raised decks are usually attached to the second level of your home and, as such, can serve as an extension of your living room. Keep in mind that proportion is key to designing a raised deck. This means the stairs leading to the deck have to be the same height as the main staircase.
However, since the goal here would be to make it seem like the deck is a part of your home, there’s less room for creativity in the deck design. Not to mention you’ll need a permit to build one.
You’d also need to install railings at least 36 inches high. Most local building authorities require these for decks that are higher than 18 inches. However, building codes vary. As such, it would be a good idea to check with your local building authority first.
Ground-Level or Unattached Decks
By contrast, you don’t need a permit to build a ground-level deck, which is essentially a box frame with floorboards on top. Unlike a raised deck, you don’t need a permit to build a ground-level or unattached deck. Plus, you can place it anywhere, although most homeowners prefer to place it in their yards.
Ground-level decks are a good choice if you want more flexibility when it comes to deck design or you want to make your home look bigger. If you want a more streamlined design, a bit of strategic landscaping can do the trick.
